Reconnecting.calm:

A user manual for balancing
handwork, brainwork and heartwork
in the age of science and technology

Tom Mahon

The election of November 2004 revealed, among other things, that the divide between a faith-based outlook, and the scientific-technical outlook, is wide and getting wider.

Eighty years after the Scopes Trial,  which pit evolution theory against the Biblical story of creation, the divide widens even as our dependence on science and technology increases.

We appear to be stuck between magical thinking (negotiating with unseen beings who pull all the strings), and a mechanical, scientific worldview ("The more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless"), and seem unable to move on to a meaningful sense of the interbeing of grace and nature; of meaning and measurement.

Reconnecting.calm suggests ways of rethinking the relationship between our handwork (technology), our brainwork (the new sciences) and our heartwork (compassion and social justice).

This is not the last word on the subject; it's barely the first.
